where did you or your friend hear about this rhythm?

i am not aware of any traditional rhythm by that name. however, mamady keita composed a piece called djigui. if you go to one of his workshops he might teach it.

Issa Bagayogo also has a song titled "Djigui" on one of his CDs (released in the West); ditto for Salif Keita (and, I'm sure, some other artists as well).

Perhaps you've come across the word in these - or similar - contexts?

Hi and thanks.

I came across the rhythm at seckou keitas workshop at African beats camp last month

It may not be traditional as a friend recalled seckou saying that mamady composed it.

I will search the above but if it's new I may not find anything.

I do have the dundun and djembe 1 & 2 but the breaks are incomplete.

Thanks again.

Edit.

Cannot find any online resource. I must write to seckou I suppose. It's not the one by Issa. This one has fast tone flam tone flam tone bass flam bass flam bass for djembe 1 part.

Thanks again

Mamaday recently visited Toronto, here's is a performance of Djigui:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agDtwF0x ... Kyw3wLXtRg

Mamady Keita and Bolokada Conde with another virtuoso solo improv demonstration at the finale of the Toronto Grand Masters Tour. The rhythm played is Djigui, an original composition by Mamady Keita. The two grand masters are joined by Amara Kante (right) and Mohamed Diaby (left).

Mohamed Diaby is playing the "tone flam tone flam tone bass flam bass flam bass" accompaniment - much tricker to play then it appears!

Indeed. Mamady taught this rhythm a few years ago in San Diego and just about everyone struggled with playing the flams cleanly at tempo.
