Postby Paul » Fri Nov 04, 2011 7:55 pm

Hi, Just wondering if this is played in any traditional rhythm (the 3rd one)

Standard
S-TS--S-TS--S-TS--

With upbeat dununbe kenkeni
--S-TS--S-TS--S-TS

????
-S-TS--S-TS--S-TS-

Just played something like it on Kpanlogo the other day..

Cheers

I studied with Boubacar Gaye (from Senegal) for a while in 2010. He refers to this as the "third Ka-DiKa". He told me that this is never played. My experience with Malinke rhythms so far confirms this. I don't think I've ever heard that played. I don't know whether the pattern is used in rhythms from other cultures.

According to my primary teacher Namory Keita, they do use something like the third ka-dika as an accompaniment part for certain rhythms in Sangbarala. For Soko, Djaa, and other rhythms that have a similar musical feel, Namory teaches this as a second accompaniment part (with regular old ka-dika as the first accompaniment):

TS--S-TS--S-TS--S-TS--S-

This part is like the "third ka-dika" from above, except with beats 1 and 2 reversed. If I remember correctly, Mamady teaches a similar part as a second accompaniment part for Djabara, except with an extra bass thrown in:

TS-BS-TS-BS-TS-BS-TS-BS-

Hi Paul,

Famoudou showed your third acc. for Soko in Bamberg in 2004. But he made clear this isn't traditional, although he liked it very much and presented it as his own idea. No wonder they now play it in Sangbaralla as well. But there is a traditional acc. that is very close to it:

Right you are! Strange, I never realised that this is the third Ka-DiKa with an extra base. Just a perception thing (or, really, not intellectualising too much).

Cheers,

Michi.
