Nunaka Bolo ?

Postby Mike » Fri Nov 05, 2010 5:43 pm

Hi guys !

I'd like to know if you have ever learnt a rhythm called Nunaka Bolo ? Actually, I learnt this rhythm few years ago with Mansa Camio but I lost the mini disc on which I had all the sounds of Nunaka Bolo. 6 years later, the memory disappeared ...

Hi guedom,

It's possible that these 2 rhythms could be the same one. I don't know Toubala Kono so, I can't tell you if it's true ... I remember some dunun patterns of the "Nunaka Bolo" but I would like to have confirmation ... I will give you some sounds to help understanding this point.

Bye

AFOba should chime in. he recorded a version of this rhythm with Mansa Camio himself on their latest disc Tolonba: Baradota.

i'm not familiar with the particular arrangement but it sounds like a soro/kassa family to me.
should i shave my moustache?

yes it's in the kassa family, but this one is played when trees are cut down, rather than when tilling fields. traditionally, a tree is selected and offerings are made. the tree is left and when the time is right the woodcutter/smith will come back with a team of people to cut down the tree. trees are not cut down en-mass. usually just a few trees are cut down, and only for good reason. one such reason could be to make masks or drums. another reason is when a dugutigi (village chief) dies, he is buried in a coffin. an old tree is selected to make the coffin and when the men set to work, this rhythm is played. there is a parallel between an old person and an old tree. it's a big loss. therefore nunakabolo will also be played at the funeral.

here's an extract of a recording i have of this rhythm:

Hi !

Yes, I only learnt one accompaniement but, to me, it's a kassa type.

@guedom : Yes, really nice pic !!

@bubudi : That's exactly what Mansa Camio told us. He said that the woodcutters(?) always look to the oldest and highest tree of the forest to honour the dugutigi.

I tried to put this rhythm on percussion studio : http://www.djembefola.fr/forum/download ... iew&id=614

And I got the mp3 sounds for those who don't have PS.

Whole rhythm :

Kenkeni :

Sangban :

Dununba :

Tell me if you feel something strange or if you see errors !

@bubudi : is there any MP3 player in the forum with specific BBCode ?

mike, there is no mp3 player. is there any advantage to having one? personally i prefer to download and play and i think a built-in player might prevent the download (at least for those who aren't technically minded).

so you already knew the cultural background of this rhythm but wanted confirmation on the parts? i will listen to your recordings tomorrow if i get the chance.

You can add the mp3 BBCode with the player and also add the link under (like it's done while including videos with the export function or images from imageshack). I have not made it like this on my site but you can easily do it in the ACP (by putting the HTML code with the player + the link in the HTML replacement code).

Yes, I know the rhythm but I want to have confirmation for the dununs parts and also for the call because I'm not sure of it.
