Non-Traditional

Postby closetdrummer » Mon Apr 02, 2012 12:04 am

I'm kinda liking the non-traditional use of the djembe. It seems to fit just fine with some of our local Country-Rock-Western-Blues Bands in my area. We have a lot of "Open Mic" and "Community Jam" opportunities here in our town. Although I like hearing traditional African djembe music, I find the non-traditional use (at least for me) to fit my style and musical tastes better. 8)

I think the exercises are going to help you!

Re:non-traditional... I like it too, especially when it is well done. For me, it is like another universe, though, since all my training is in Malian style. I find when I first tried to 'freestyle' it was a huge challenge. Now I have enough groundwork it feels far more comfortable for me to improvise.

I also find the rock, country, western, blues, folks seem fairly open to this instrument if it's not played offensively and overbearing. The djembe played softly is a beautiful sound that adds so much texture to numerous genres of music.

What a benefit and blessing that you have been trained in the original Malian style. You have the foundation which is simply great! You can take it from there and run with it!!

I feel very blessed indeed! I got connected with a great teacher early on and it has been an amazing ride.

Off topic question for you:
I started a Facebook Hand Drummers U.S.A. group that has attracted some amazing hand-drummers. Is this something I can plug as an invite on this site? If so, where can I post the link?
