I added a few changes now:

- I have included info for embedding rhythms in the forum
- roll functionality - click a box and split it.
- ability to delete tabs

Thanks on the box splitting.... I have some ideas (other than rolls) for that...

Also, thanks for all of the work that goes into creating the notation "software" as well as the rest of the work that goes into this site!

recently a couple of members have said that they don't see the boxes when using the notation feature. it has been suggested it might be a browser issue with safari. stranger things have happened, but i have tried the feature with firefox, internet explorer and chrome (all on pc) and have not experienced any difficulties.

please ensure you follow steps 3 and 4 in the tutorial. you must specify both a drum type and a rhythm timing. after you do that, there will be a short pause before the boxes appear (you may have to scroll down to see them, depending on your screen size/resolution).

let me know if this helps or not, and what browser you are using.

The boxes don't appear for me. I am using Safari.

As for my opinion about tab...

I think if people want to study micro-timing they should listen to recordings of the masters. I think you are way over-complicating things if you start wanting to write down swing. I mean maybe its worth coming up with some general terms for swing but notating it seems too much to me. That is really up to an individuals ability to hear it by ear.

Thats just me though.... I respect other people opinions if they disagree.

A few years back I was checking out "brazilian swing" and I found that if I broke every quater note into 5 beats instead of four, I could recreate something that sounded almost like it. This wasn't very useful in the end. Just to say that, its not that I'm not interested in swing, its just that I think its a bit of a waste of time trying to be mathematical about it. Swing is what makes it "human" and every individual interprets the swing in their own way.

totally agree about swing being human and a bit pointless to rely on notation of any kind to learn a rhythm (whether you try to include swing in it or not). for the most part, swing is added in the notation feature optionally, as an afterthought. i feel that some learners are visual. as such, having a visual representation of how the notes are swung helps some people to absorb it better. of course, you need to hear it repetitively, and play lots, keep listening, and be corrected by a good teacher until you start to get it. it goes without saying that you are never going to learn the swing of a rhythm just from notation, just as you can't properly learn the interplay of parts or the feel of a rhythm or the melody of the rhythm, from notation. at the end of the day it's just a visual aid. as for complicating things, i think it depends. the way it's done here seems really simple to me. no need at all to get mathematical about it.

I've have never run djembe workshops.... full stop.

Maybe I could have a more informed opinion in future but I totally agree... someone people only get it once they see it.

As for the tab on Djembefola... Do I need to download something in order to post tab?

This isn't caused by user error, but by browser incompatibility. It works fine with IE8, but doesn't work with Safari 5.

safari seems to be the only browser affected, since the notation feature is totally usable in ie, firefox and chrome. if we knew what particular line of code safari is not rendering properly, james could try writing a fix.

This is probably an unrelated error. When I go to http://djembefola.com/drum-notation/tab.php, I get the following in top-right corner:

Code: Select all
[phpBB Debug] PHP Notice: in file /home/solas/public_html/drum-notation/tab.php on line 63: include(templates/videonav.php) [function.include]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory
[phpBB Debug] PHP Notice: in file /home/solas/public_html/drum-notation/tab.php on line 63: include(templates/videonav.php) [function.include]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory
[phpBB Debug] PHP Notice: in file /home/solas/public_html/drum-notation/tab.php on line 63: include() [function.include]: Failed opening 'templates/videonav.php' for inclusion (include_path='.:/usr/lib/php:/usr/local/lib/php')

Not sure where the code fails. But none of the input boxes for the notes show up. There is simply a blank area there. Only the "deleterow" button shows on the line where the input boxes should be.

Cheers,

Michi.

That error is a php error, rather than a Javascript error.

The system does not work actually work in Chrome (because it uses Webkit, the same rendering engine as Safari).

There is no actual error raised in the browser for this problem.

I have spent considerable time on trying to remedy this problem, but it's a real pain. I will try again asap, but in the mean time, please use a different browser.
