I got this email from Rainer today:
The results of my research project
www.djembe.uni-bayreuth.de have recently appeared in Music
Theory Online, a journal of the Society for Music Theory
This is a peer reviewed academic publication. The journals'
issue 16 no.4 is dedicated to the interface of rhythm theory
as developed in africanist ethnomusicology and general music
theory. The publication is open access:
http://mto.societymusictheory.org/issue ... .16.4.htmlMy contribution uses the method of computerized measurement
and analysis of the timing of multitrack ensemble pieces. I
try to describe the structure and usage of rhythmic feels
("swing" types) in the language of milliseconds and
numerical relationships. This approach is rewarding as for
the insights it offers, yet quite special -- meaning:
toilsome to digest but for specialized musicologists.
Nevertheless I hope that some participants in the wider
circle of "jembe community" can profit, too. Not the least,
I am happy to contribute to the emerging representation of
Mande music in the rather exclusive field of music theory.
All the best, and happy christmas, and a happy new year,
Rainer
