Jessie,

16/8 is another way of representing a binary rhythm where there are 16 8th notes as the underlying framework. 4/4 is 4 quarter notes in the framework, which you could think of as 8/8 so 16/8 is just two groups of 8/8. still binary though.

Thanks for the info.
What rhythms would you categorize as 16/8 for an example?

Every binary rhythm could be categorized as 16/8. I always write binary as 4/4, but it's reasonable to do 16/8. I had never seen this signature until I read Thomas Ott's book with Famoudou Konate "Rhythms and Songs from Guinea". Maybe 16/8 is more popular in Germany?

might be, Brian.
In fact 16/8 is much more logical to me, too (I often SAY 4/4, but WRITE 16/8 - as we all do btw, have a look at the notations: everyone of us puts 16 notes in one mesure and the djembefola.com tab system does as well).

thanks Daniel, that's good to know.

as far as the 16 notes go for tab, i always assumed this was in 4/4 time and the underlying pulse was 16th notes rather than 8th notes, which you would give 16 subdivisions of the time in one bar. maybe i'm wrong though.

however, maybe we should start a new thread as this topic is now starting to diverge from the original thread.

best,
