Koteba

Epizo taught Koteba at the recent Bundagen camp. (See my blog post for notation of the parts.) Epizo didn't provide and background info on the rhythm, so all I have is the name. Anyone have any more info?

Here's a video from a koteba festival that my wife took in Safo, Mali, in 2001. My understanding is that it's an annual fest, starts in the daytime (what you see here) and the dancing continues into the night. Late at night, there are several masks that come out, one is a warraba (beast/lion)... I'll have to check on the others, and see if I can get some more info for you.

Thanks a lot for that Paddy! Great footage! Sounds quite different to the rhythm Epizo taught, but I can see the commonality.
