I really reeeeeally like this style. I'm heading over to Mali in February and I was wondering if any of you guys had a contact for a Jeli Dunun teacher over there?

Dramane 'Gaucher' Diabate teaches, you must be able to find him on the web. In Sidiki Camara's workshop in january you can also follow jelidunun classes by Lamine Kouyate, who is a really nice guy and a experienced jelidunun player. Sidikicamara.com for contact. If things don't work I could dig up Lamine's mobile for you from somewhere.

nice post bubudi. this is really one of the major differences in Malian drumming compared to other local styles. The biomechanics of playing the dununba in Mali is much different than in most regions and one cannot separate the specific feel of Malian rhythms and the style in which they play the dununba.

Any idea why people keep attaching Wolosso to Dansa? I enjoy the arrangement and the national ballet often plays this pairing.

Anyone looking to play the dununba in a Mali style should be aware of stylistic differences between the instrumental ensemble and the drumming ensemble. A good teacher should be able to point this out to you, and even though the basic mechanics and instrument construction are quite similar between the kassonke dunun and the jelidununba, there are slight differences in playing the dununba in the midst of drums or other instruments. One of the finest pieces of music in the world is old-school Mali Sadjo with kora, bala, n'goni, dununba, and n'tamani. :)

I asked Sidiki Camara about this, because I noticed this too. Madou Fane, who now plays djembe solo for the National Ballet even taught us Dansa with Wolosso attached to it, a great piece of music. Sidiki told me that it's an invention of the National Ballet! That's why. And when I look at recordings I have this way on cd's, it has always something to do with the National Ballet... For example Mare Sanogo' CD Fourasi, the track Tanta.

If your looking to study near Kayes, and are prepared to stay in a village, I can give you the numbers of a few teachers in a few villages that are good. Send me a message if you want.
