CD Khassonka dunun: Djeli foli

Postby komadich » Fri Dec 04, 2009 7:53 am

Hello everybody,

I recently bought the CD Traditional music from Mali : Khassonka dunun, which some of you already know, as I've seen.
Listening to the 1st and the 6th song puzzles me, tho. It is supposed to be JeliFoli, but to me it sounds really like Garanke:
Dun:
i.ii.ii.ii.i
o.x..o..x..o

Does anyone have a clue what is the pattern they are playing? Thanks!

Is it possible that they are playing:
Dun + Sangban:
i...i...i...i...
OO......C...O.O.

but it is just me that doesn't hear it right?

They are in fact playing Jeli foli. In Kayes This form of jeli foli is also sometimes refered to as Kalen. On the same CD you can hear that the Khassonka people play a different rhythm that's called Gerankefoli on the CD. That same Jeli Foli dundun accompaniment can be played for different reasons. The song, dance and context is how you can determine it's purpose and meaning.
