Keyu?

Postby michi » Tue Jan 26, 2010 10:05 pm

I just got back from a three and a half day camp with Mohamed Bangoura (Bangouraké), Valanga Khoza from South Africa (he taught singing), and Fode Mane from Senegal (he taught dance). Mohamed taught Soliwulen, Keyu (sp?), and Niger.

My question is about Keyu. Is that the proper spelling? (I couldn't find anything under that spelling in my searches.) For those of you who have Mamady's Vol. 4 DVD, this is the same rhythm as is shown in the Pyramid documentary in the bonus section. The rhythm is played starting at 3:36 into the video.

Thanks,

Michi.

Right that's the one, thanks! And I learned it before from Mamady, in San Diego last year. I knew I had learned that rhythm there, but couldn't remember the name and didn't have my recordings with me...

Mohamed pronounced it as "Keyu" but, according to Mamady, the pronounciation is "Kedoo". Spelling is "Kedju" (but the "j" is silent).

Cheers,

Michi.

Hi,
it's also included in Mamady's cd Mandeng Djara, http://www.mamadykeita.com/index.php?op ... &Itemid=54

It's listed under the name Kedjula Kanin, Track 10. As implicit in your discussion, Kedjula goes for the song and kanin....

cheers
