Has this been explored here: virtual jamming?

Postby buttafingers » Wed Jul 15, 2009 4:11 pm

What would you guys think of starting some rhythms and then having others layer on top of it? It could be done in a branching style. The original beat would be added to, and if a particular flavor appeals to you, add your part. This could go on and on, within reason. Or somebody could start a new interpretation and go in a different direction. It would take some effort and making the beats loop-able would be sweet, but that's beyond my current skillset. Any ideas or comments?

http://www.moosware.net/PercussionStudio/

I used this for a while before I got a hardware looper and a mic to record the instruments and play them back live. This works great. The ensemble I play with uses this to keep track of any breaks/calls/solos/and rhythm variations we come up with. We've even added Bala parts. You can play rhythms for free, and make them, but can only save rhythms when you pay the SMALL fee for the program. You can actually record your drum, and set it up as an instrument so when you play back rhythms, its your drum sound and not a midi.

I'm up for playing with some rhythms, and this program will let us add tracks, and share the files back and forth (as long as we have the same instruments installed). It's only on PC, I have a mac and just run a Windows environment on it for this program.

There are lots of cool rhythms already available for download off the website. Check it out!!

I'm more into virutal as in, using skype to Jam, than percussion studio stuff.

Percussion studio sounds horrible IMHO... :puke:

Makes me think of "blind poetry"

Where one person writes a line, then the next person writes a line (then covers up the previous line) then the next person responds to ONLY the previous line...

Musically, it would work best over email, each person on the list gets the previous persons loop, at the end they are all put together to see what comes out?

Having the software/formating match up would be an issue unless you worked with multiple wave files...

Getting everyone on the same software would be a problem unless it was freeware...

Random "end of the work day" thoughts.

PS: off to class!! :djembe: :djembe:

Skype would be cool... but I'd think there would be too much of a delay to get anything successful out of that.

I think it's worth playing together on an astral plane. Sort of like when Chris Farley would look for ninja guidance. That way we can play while we "sleep" and always have a drum that is in tune. Anyone teaching an enlightening class that we can take to prep ourselves for this out of body experience?

This isn't by any means out of the question. In fact, it's been done. Check out the video below. True, it would take some technical capabilities by the jammers. As far as software goes, we can all use the same program by downloading a free 30-day trial version of a multi-tracking software such as ACID Pro or ACID Music Studio.

We would need to be able to upload our recorded wave files to the server, along with the project file, so that one of us can mix them for the next person to use as a scratch track. Once we have everyone's recording, we can mix the tracks down into a final, awesome, cacophonous, loud jembe-and-dunun-and-other-sounds-ruckus! Don't really have time right now to spearhead this project, but it's a fun idea.
