L' Djembefola Hat

Postby Kallaumari » Tue Nov 17, 2009 7:00 pm

Hi everyone,

I've come to the point of having to create my out outfit for presentations. I'm currently building up my djembefola Hat (you know.. the regular conic hat with hair on it...)

My question is... does any body know of which animal the hair is?

I guess it looks horse crin like but i'm nort really sure. If anybody knows where i can find a tutorial for making these hats I'll be more thank thankful.

I attach a couple pics of the hats Im trying to recreate....

Thanks for allyour help.

Function is obviously to protect the player's ears from the awful din he's making ;-)

Iya calls them Feleke. I'll try to remember to ask about the hair next time I speak to him. I doubt that they're made from horse hair now because I don't think there are any horses in Guinea (though every time I make an assumption like that I turn out to be wrong). In all my time in Guinea I never saw a horse. I questioned a few people on this and was told by several of them that Seckou Toure had them all killed because he thought they were evil spirits. No idea if there is any truth to this.

By the way, has anyone ever seen a white person wear a feleke and not look stupid?

The image at the top definitely looks like goat or sheep hair to me. I'd guess it is an African ram. They have a lot of long fur around their necks.

I can't imagine a non-african pulling one of these off. If you make one, you definitely need to post pics of you wearing it!

I don't mind making a fool of myself, as long as it doesn't become a habit ;)
