Djembe Strap????

Postby keeptahoeblue » Sun Mar 28, 2010 4:04 pm

Hello, I am looking to buy the finest strap possible. I checked out the one at drumskull but I want a solid color. Any suggestions?

Buy some webbing and a side release buckle, plus a slide so you can stow excess length without it dangling. You'll need a sewing machine to sew the ends around the buckle and the slide.

Cheers,

Michi.

I use this stuff:
http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_deta ... 4302691525

You can cut it with scissors or a sharp knife, then melt the ends slightly to prevent fraying.
It is meant for rock climbing and cost $1.50 per foot, is available in different colours.

Here is a cheaper version of the same stuff, multiple colours $1.20 per meter.

The previous posting should have said $1.50 per meter, not foot.

most climbing shops should sell 2-2.5" webbing. it basically looks like a seat belt strap. these are very comfortable for playing.
should i shave my moustache?

I'm quite fond of the shoulder straps on X8Drums, but I'm not sure if they have solid colors.

I think the X8Drums harness-style straps look a bit silly myself. I prefer just a plain ordinary strap. All you need is 14-15' of webbing. If you want to get fancy, add a side release buckle and a slide.

Cheers,

Michi.

just use a guitar strap and a carabiner clip to clip the strap to the handle on your djembe. thats what i did and it works like a champ.

While we're discussing djembe straps, I thought I'd ask about the different ways to use them. I use them as "suspenders" (over the shoulder and crossed at the back) as this is the way I was first shown. However, I've noticed that many African drummers simply strap it around their waist/back, often forces you to lean forward (i.e. doesn't look too comfortable). Then again, the downside of using them as suspenders is that the straps often get in the way.

You can use a small rope to tie on the djembe and bring the strap higher near the middle of your chest. This way it will not come in the way of playing.

See the photo below, you can vary the length of the rope and make it higher, and also tie it close on the djembe so that it doesn;t bother you with the hands hitting it.

So, which part of the djembe do you hook the strap to? I'm guessing the ring - but that could be a bad idea ..... I'm new, you know! So what do I know?

And where can I find one of those carabiner clips to hook to a guitar strap?

i wouldn't worry about a strap at this early stage of your playing. you don't need a strap for seated playing, it's just for performance, so you can stand and move with it.
