The djembe pattern for kakilambe gave me trouble initially as well. It wasn't until I started really focussing on the dununs (especially the kenkeni) for soko, kakilambe, djabarra, tiriba, etc. where I was able to lock into pattern A. Now that I've gotten a handle on that pattern, I've set my sights on pattern B. Interestingly, Afoba's suggestion about playing the cross-pattern bell has been helpful.

Cheers,

Brian - whose version of kakilambe are you working on? I was taught an arrangement for 3 djembes (1 lead, 1 accomp., one bass) that is almost identical to the one that Fara Tolno teaches. (See Rhythm Ref. Project MP3s.)

I think it might be a bit easier to "get" in a 3-djembe arrangement than in some others that I've heard.

e2c - this was a long time ago, but I was working on Mamady Keita's version. At the time I had a tendency for the slap to fall on the pulse instead of just after. It's a common mistake.

Code: Select all
wrong version:
1..2..3..4..
B.tS..B.tS..

correct version:
1..2..3..4..
B..tS.B..tS.

Yes, i can see how/why that could happen... I'm not super-familiar with his version, but I have audio of it and I think that bit is tricky. (Not that other versions aren't! ;))
