Anyone ever heard of a rhythm called...

Postby FreekAce » Mon Feb 14, 2011 5:17 pm

Kado Don?

With my regular teacher in Guinea at the moment i've been taking some classes with Amadou Kienou. Yesterday he tought us a rhythm he called Kado Don (Don = Dance?).
I've been trying to find some info on the rhythm but cannot find anything on it. Amadou did mention that depending on where you are the name could vary. He explained it as a rhythm being played as a to accompany the grinding of grain in a mortar. Does anybody have any idea what a different name could be for this, and has anyone heard of this name before?

I haven't. Are you sure it's not "Kalo" (moon) ? Sometimes the L sounds like an R or D. Still, I've never heard of Kalo don. (Yes, don = dance).

thank you for your reply bops!

im sure it was kado. to be honest, after re-playing the parts at home, i get the idea that it may just have been excersise in technique. a very good one, he really worked us hard and it contained all the basiscs. tempo, defenition of b/t/s and combining everything. but i never got the sense of it being a rhythm like others i've played before. it was missing that swing you know?

there were also a couple of beginners in the class who from what i could tell didnt really have all the basics down quite yet. it was an excellent class, and a very good excersise that i'll use a lot to practice. but in the past have i've found plenty of information on the rhythms i've learned. i try to get as much info on the history and cultural significance of the rhythm as i possibly can (yay djembefola.com!!!) but there is nothing to be found with this name. i dont like doubting my teacher and i would have been perfectly fine if i was told today we are going to focus on our playing technique so that next time we can properly learn a rhythm.

so perhaps i'm wrong (which i wouldnt mind at all) but im really not sure.

Les Bamakoise often refer to the Dogon as Kado (apparently a derogatory term as viewed by the Dogon, or Donkono). They sometimes play a watered down version of Dogon rhythms applied to the djembe ensemble and call it kado foly. just a piece of info. might not be relevant at all, but just a thought.
