Hey we were just talking about south Africa. Whats the scene like there? What are the djembes being made out of? Hopefully some nice, dense, heavy wood? Or is it mostly replicas made from light/soft wood? Are there any problems with de-forestation due to djembe making? Do most people down there respect & study the tradition or is it more "free-style"?

Having just moved back here after being away for six years, I am not sure what the scene is like here to be honest. I can say that it seems to be more free-style here whereas I prefer a mixture of both traditional and free-style.

Does anyone know of a regular drumming circle in Johannesburg south africa, were we can join in. We are a few beginners and pro drummer that would like to join a group.
