fans of traditional or ballet style drumming will no doubt appreciate sidiki camara, but if it's drumming that you're looking for, this cd is not for you.

on 'tolerance', sidiki gets together with some norwegian jazz musicians. the result is a funky but laid back groove. included are some modern arrangements of traditional mande songs, with sidiki joining dieudonne vakote (cameroon) on vocals, sung in his native malinke. sidiki plays kamelengoni, kpanlogos, djembe and filedunun. the drumming is very low key, adding the beat and very little else. to some, it will be of interest how sidiki successfully takes the djembe and kpanlogo to other styles of music. that's definitely not something that just anyone can pull off.

the melange of music is successful because there are call and response patterns and the instruments (saxophone, clarinet, guitar, percussion and bass) seem to be talking in a way not unlike what you hear in mande music. so the music is smooth, unlike the more experimental jazz-african fusions, without being cliche.

this cd makes for very nice listening and if you like funk with an earthy hint of mande, you'll enjoy this cd.

Wow! Thanks Bubudi, I have the CD and enjoy it for a while now, but it took me some time to get used to it. I knew Sidiki was busy with another cd, and I hoped so much it would be like his first, Ayou Wele, (which is still one of my all time favourites). But it's so different, and in my opinion very beautifull music again. Very well described:
this cd makes for very nice listening and if you like funk with an earthy hint of mande, you'll enjoy this cd.

Thanx
