DVD Dununba & Soko instructional by "Laou Laou" Bangoura

Postby bubudi » Mon Sep 20, 2010 9:05 pm

i don't know much about bafode "laou laou" bangoura other than what it says on the sleeve, but will let this extract from his dvd do the talking. born in matam, laou laou's father was a ballet djoliba national member. at the age of 10 laou laou decided to follow his father's footsteps and play djembe professionally. he played in ballet surakhata and wassa as a djembe soloist. he was later recruited into the boka juniors as a djembe soloist. he became the lead soloist of the group after boka camara passed away. laou laou has been teaching guinean percussion since 1997.

the unique thing about this instructional is that it focuses on the dununba rhythms and soko. dununs are played traditional style. song and dance is included in the performance, not just drums. here's the rhythm list:

1.Tama
2.Dunungbe
3.Takosaba
4.Bolokonondo
5.M'fakaba
6.Soko
7.Soko chaud

wontanara: dununba & soko
3500 yen ($40 usd)

How did you manage to order this? As far as I can see, the site is available only in Japanese.

Thanks,

Michi.

Thanks for that! I tried emailing them. Every new page I get to is in Japanese again. I hope I managed to press the right buttons... :-) I guess I'll find out in the next few days.

Cheers,

Michi.

good point, guedom. i got the impression from the video description, but went back to the site and am also thinking it's a live performance rather than an instructional, which is a bit of a shame. hopefully the distributors will get back to michi and he can ask them about this...

I had difficulty relying on google translate when attempting to order the other DVD release from what I am guessing are the same folks who put out this DVD. Fortunately, I have a friend in Japan and he lended his translation skills and I just recieved the "Wassa Foli" DVD featuring Ibrahima Sory "Rambo" Bangoura. This DVD was filmed in the same location and includes some of the same drummers and dancers. The DVD features great talent and arrangements, HD cameras, but NO tripods for the cameras. This bummed me out and made me a little dizzy. I guess I can manage considering the content, but any production DVD with multiple camera angles without using any tripods to steady the view boggles my mind ... at least use a dunun to steady the cameras or something. The sound was good enough, but it seems they were relying on the camera mics.

Here is what I just received from Konkoina African Wear in response to my enquiry:
The Wontanara is instructional and performance DVD.
There was playing each rhythm Kenkeni ,Sangban, Dundun, djembe accompaniment and solo .
Next one is dacneing and singing ensemble drum.
The last I for recorded the performance ensemble song , dance and drum rhythms all.

The Bere na Matam is performance DVD.
But you can see drum , Balafon and Bote , the difference between woman dance and man dance , ensemble sing .

I think I'll order a copy :)

Cheers,

Michi.

hi,

i was doing some internet research about the dunumba rythms and I found this forum topic.

I would like to know your opinions about that DVD, and about its instrutional quality.
it really is a mistery for me why there aren't instrutional dvd's, book's, cd's with dunumba rythms.
I don't know - are there?
