M'bemba Fakoli - A Musical Journey Through Guinea

Postby e2c » Mon Jun 15, 2009 1:40 am

This DVD has been out for a few months - am kind of surprised that nobody's posted about it yet... so I'll go first.

Image

Music and dances are:

Fakoli - feat. Bolokada Conde & guitarist Petite Mamady Kamissoko
Mendiani - recorded in the village of Mernah
Soko - feat. Fadouba Oulare & his family
Koro Fola - shot in Mernah
Kawa - feat. Fadouba Oulare & family
Dundunba/Kassa (ballet arrangement adapted for 3 drummers) - feat. Lancei Kante, Koumbagna Conde & Bolokada Conde
Yereko - feat. Bolokada Conde & his troupe in Mernah
Dundunba (clips from various dununbas; I wish there was more footage from these).

Drumskull stocks it, and I think Rhythm Traders does, too. I haven't seen the whole thing as yet, but... I think it's worth getting based on the segments I have seen to date.

For more info., go to http://www.abarakamusic.com

* I'll add comments later, after I've had a chance to watch the entire DVD.

Well drum bros and sisters, I just watched it (thanks DrumSkull Drums) and... :dundun: I love it.
It makes me want to go back to Guinea again... it's on the cards (2010/2011)
I have to investigate it a bit more I guess like with all good things.
The variety is great and BC is a great djembefola as we all know.
I will write more when I have seen it again a dozen more times :D

Happy Drumming,
Steady

I love this DVD!

I watch it often.... for some reason I usually pass the first track... I'm not too into the singing through a loud speaker over the djembes... haha.. It just sounds harsh. I love the doudounba dancing and I like the Mendiani masks/dance. Seems like there is some street drumming and some village drumming. Great DVD, great quality... actually, I'm just killing some time now.. I think I'll pop it in!

Bolokada was in Charlotte not too long ago and had some copies with him...

I picked this and MBara up when Bolokada was staying with me last weekend.

All in all, it's a great video and I wish there were more available like this one. The picture and sound quality is superb, with the exception of the first piece, as RHD mentioned... 2 mics? ouch.

The 2 Fadouba clips make the DVD worth the price of admission. The stuff shot in Mernah was really nice, too.

I have to admit that I was disappointed with the segment at Moustapha Berte's house, with Koumbagna Conde and Lancei Kante. Why wasn't there an accompanist? The performance lacked energy. It seemed like there was no one there watching. They should have had a whole group, and invited people over to watch, to give the show some spirit.
