michi - there definitely *is* a lot of garbled "information" that keeps getting passed around the internet. And that's one of the reasons why I don't like to refer to the sites in question.

Agree, there is no shortage of misinformation on the net. But neither Mohamed nor Fara are websites :-)

Cheers,

Michi.

bangourake has said (as well as some other susu teachers) weddings are definitely one of the main traditional occasions for yoki to be played, but sometimes the function/occasion for a rhythm changes over time. the same has been said of tiriba, ngri, etc.

e2c, i suggest you read frederick lamp's book which has some great pictures of real baga masks, very much in the style above. agreed that it's not in the style of masks used by other ethnic groups.

@ bubudi: thanks for the book suggestion. I don't want to come across as a know-it-all (because I really don't know it all), but my academic training is in art and art history... so I was trying to comment from that perspective.

Cool?

Baga Nimba mask (apparently meant to be worn on the shoulder, per text on a similar object in the National Museum of African Art, D.C.)

there seem to be lots of pics of the Nimba mask floating around the web...

yes totally, and there is a definite similarity between the two (d'mba and ra-bomp ra-feth).

i'm definitely far from knowing but a shade of what's to know about baga masks. that's why i referred you to f. lamp's book.
