Found out about a documentary today that sounds very interesting - Koteba - La Vie platinée.

I believe it's about Ballet Koteba in Abidjan, but I haven't seen it so I can't say much more than that.

Apparently Mamady Keita is in it and a very others we may know.

Has anyone else seen this?

Found out about a documentary today that sounds very interesting - Koteba - La Vie platinée.

That isn't the film, but the soundtrack for it. Also, it's not a documentary, but a drama.

I believe it's about Ballet Koteba in Abidjan, but I haven't seen it so I can't say much more than that.

I found the following description:

The Kotedba dance company from the impoverished Treichville section of Abidjan wins an invitation to Paris to perform at the Beaubourg Center in an international competition. The group tries desperately to raise money for the trip, but the lead dancer is held hostage by her wealthy family who objects to her participation in the troupe. The film shows the lively street life of Abidjan and the hopeful anticipation of the dance group to make their dream of a lifetime come true.

The director is Claude Francois Cadiou. The film was released in France 1987, with a length of 87 minutes. There is also a German version that was shown on TV with a length of 90 minutes.

I don't believe the movie is in print. All my searches turned up nothing. I found a message from Eric Charry dating back to 1996 on an African film forum at MIT asking about it, but no-one ever replied. I'd say the movie has been unavailable for at least 15 years.

Mamady appears in the movie. From his website:

Participated with the troupe in the production of the film, "La Vie Platinee" ("Life in Platinum") by Claude Cadiou, coproduced by the French television channel, TF1, and the French Ministry of Culture, and filmed in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. New rythms are created for the musical part of the film.

Not sure whether that is a logo or a version of the movie poster. Mamady's website doesn't say.
