vermont here (but i'm no hippie!)

Postby iAMtheMA » Thu Jul 15, 2010 2:29 am

hey, all.
my name is michael. i am currently attending a liberal arts environmental school in mid-western vermont and have taken a year's worth of instructions for the west african djembe - what other school does that? i feel blessed. that is not to say that i am a year experienced, per se ...due to all of the other academics i had to deal with, the djembe course unfortunately made its way towards the back of the line in both semesters - priorities, it happens. but i passed. and i'm back, borrowing a friend's drum, ready to get into the full swing of things here - especially as i've another two months of summer free to figure it out ...or at least start a decent practice routine, you know? well, i'm not sure what else i can say about myself. oh! i love music (it's my minor), my favorite band is tool, i believe the heart really is a drum machine, and i'm a curiously quick learner when it comes to music and polyrhythms ...i don't know what it is. i love polyrhythms - they're trippy, and i can't get enough of it. it can be a beautiful thing. anyways, i'm glad to have stumbled upon this community - i hope to learn much and grow strong amongst my new rhythmic peers.

Hey Michael, welcome to the forum!

Wow, a djembe course? That's amazing! Can you tell us a bit more about it? How the course is structured, what you learned? I'd really like to know more about this!

Cheers,

Michi.

Hi Michael,
This is Michael in Worcester, MA. Glad to hear you can learn W. African drumming at your school. Who teaches it?
BTW, Worcester Polytechnic Institute here offers an African percussion and dance ensemble as a weekly club meeting. Mohamed Kalifa Kamara from Guinea teaches that and the group performs at various events. Great fun!
