I didn't think there was anyone living in Tramore who played djembe! Never mind someone who was skinning up barrel dununs malinke style.
I'm living in Galway. We have a group here, a few of us have been over to Africa in the last few years. My girlfriend also plays Dioula balafon.
Have you been to Africa yourself? If you're ever around Galway let me know and we can meet up. Me and Keanie are also planning to make some big barrel duns in the next few weeks. I'd also be very interested in getting some Irish cowskins if you have a connection.
Hey there Dleufer! Yessir, I'm in Tramore with my djembes (haven't played much for about two years or so because there is no-one else here who plays), I used to live in Cork and played a lot with Paul there, we even ran some classes in the art college there. But my interest was kindled by my wife who bought a lovely drum from John Barron about ten years ago or so right here in Waterford. I've reheaded loads of djembes so I was thinking that I really had to try to make a barrel dun seeing that I have a few barrels lying around here. It will also get me back into playing djembe again and learn some new material. I'd also like to start up a workshop for rudimentary technique and basic rhythms here in Waterford or maybe in Tramore. I think the time is right, people are looking for alternatives to going out to pubs and restaurants so why not take up an instrument that brings so many benefits with it?
Never been to Africa unfortunately - it has been on my list for many many years now and I will definitely go when I can!
About cow skins: I will be getting them through a Senegalese friend in Cork so Irish skins, unfortunately no. You could try deer hides as well. Only thing is the fat which needs to be trimmed off. A friend in Cork did a huge dun with deer skins but the cleaning of the skins was a pain in the ass!
