Hi
I'm David
from Lisbon, Portugal
I don't play that much, though I've been playing for 14 years.
What I mean by that is that I don't have much practice on the malinke way. Spent too long playing by instinct.
I work in theatre and It's hard to get time and a place to practice. As well as people to do it with. Or to learn from, here in Lisbon.
I got a guinean djembe, wich is quite good. I spent years wanting a real djembe and finally got it. Now I just got to upgrade my skills to it.
I'm working on a project for a theater show based on Titus Andronicus, from Shakespeare, from where I got fascinated by Aaron, the Moor. You know, a black man.
I'm going to direct the play and I'm going to put a band on the show. And malinke percussion.
It's a passion, as it is for all of us in this site, and I'm bringin it to my work as a theatre creator.
I know some people with knowledge in malinke percussion and probably will call one or some of them to give formation on malinke percussion to the band that will play on the show, wich is composed by drums, electric bass, guitar, keyboards and one or two djembes.
I'm researching on dunumba rythms for the play. They go along with the ideas I have for the use of djembes on the show.
It's quite a heavy enterprise, on one of Lisbon's most important theatres, and it will have its premiere only on the beginning of 2012. This year I'll be working with the band, and preparing a preliminar show/workshop with actors for october, to test and explore some ideas around the text from shakespeare.
I chose that topic title because I've been spending too much time on the internet watchin videos and all to attend my longing for djembe. On the other hand, that's how I found a guy here in Portugal who got me the guinean djembe for a really nice price. Hopefully, with this work for the play and with the band, I will get to practice more.
This is a relly good site, with a noble purpose.
Bem hajam
(ancient portuguese expression for thanks, meaning something like "that good and happiness be with you")
