Hi from Houston, Texas

Postby Djembe-nerd » Wed Nov 25, 2009 4:02 pm

I have been reading and posting in the site for sometime now, and have been lazy in introducing myself. So sorry about the late introduction.

I have been playing djembe for about 8-9 months now, and my pick up has been fast since I was playing hand drums before. I used to play Indian hand drum "Dholak" its like a small Dunun, with different pitch and dia on both sides, rope tuned and is ususally played more in folk and traditional music. Did not learn it from someone, just learned it myself by playing and following. So, had a little introduction to polyrhythms before djembe. Also, since in indian music the music follows the singer, a lot of improvising and keeping up to the variations is required, I understand the following the dancer concept in West African music.

Its been fun till now, and I want to attend some advance classes, before that i have to practice on my speed and technique more. We have a teacher here in Houston and I learn through this site and others too, and books about the culture and rhythyms too.

I appreciate the knowledge sharing here, and hope to be helpful, if I can be. I hope you will bear withmy questions and out of the box idea attitide sometimes :D

Violeta-

I live in Houston and know a cool teacher for you. He just got to Houston a half year ago. He is not a master drummer but knows a lot to share and will let you sit in on dance classes if you are ready. He can prolly go advanced for you.

Plus, i am always looking for good people to play with. I hover somewhere in the intermediate zone.

PM me.
