finally activated my acct

Postby Tokapelli » Mon Jan 24, 2011 3:12 am

Hello everybody, ive been around for a while but didnt have access to my email so i just activated my account. My girlfriend got me a djembe for christmas, but she ended up giving it to me just after thanksgiving, lol. I guess she thought i was stressed out and i needed the drum sooner than later, and she was right. So ive been playing it almost everyday since then, I really love it. Its a smaller drum, i think its made from mahogony with a goat skin, with i think about a 9-10 in head X 16 in tall. I figure its easier for a beginner to go faster on a smaller drum with less distance between slaps and bass, but obviously speed is not everything so i would like to move up to a bigger drum someday. Anyway, looking forward to finally joining the conversation here!

Hi there

I started with a 13 inch djembe, but my teacher sold me a 10 inch bougarabou that i've played since 2003. Only recently have i started playing larger drums, currently getting into a 12 inch Iroko calf skin djembe.

I do like a good 10 inch drum though, they're incredibly responsive, fast and direct but do lack the big harmonic sound of a larger drum. But i won't ever part with my 10 inch bougarabou, it just rocks!

If ya love the 10 inch, keep on at it, lovin' ya drum is what makes ya play it, and playing it is what makes ya a good drummer. Welcome to your wonderful new journey.

And as a stress buster there's nothing better than drumming. Drumming is one of the best anger/stress management therapies there is IMHO.

:)
