A Brazilian in NY

Postby Gustavo » Wed Sep 08, 2010 9:59 pm

Hello everyone!! grettings from the big apple!

My name is Gustavo and I've been playing djembe on and off for the past 15 years.I'm not a professional percussionist, just a passionate student.
I had the honor to study, jam and work with some awesome teachers here in NY.
M'bemba Bangoura, Michael Markus,Mamadouba Mito Camara. Not to mention other great students that are very passionate about Guine culture like me and you all, I presume :) I am also into repairing djembes and other instruments.

Djembe is my favorite instrument in the world!

I grew up playing different types of Afro-Brazilian and Brazilian music like Maracatu, Samba, Toques repicados etc. But, I have a lot of passion for african culture. The connection between the drums and the dancers is absolutely breathtaking for me. I just can't get enough!

Anyways,This is the drummer side of me.
I'm glad that I found this website and hope to be able to learn, grow and share with all of you here!!

Wongai

Cheers
Gustavo

Hi Gustavo,

Welcome to the board! I see that we have studied with some of the same teachers. I agree, they are great. Thanks for joining us. Talk to you soon,

Oi Gustavo!

Tudo bem?

I am a musician from Perth, Australia who is learning portuguese.

My Brazilian friends gave me the name Mikeleza because of my passion for Brazilian percussion. That is what I do professionally here, I run a samba school which teaches a wide range of Brazilian rhythms and we do many gigs, workshops etc.

My other passion aside from this is Djembe and Duns etc. We don't have any Guinean teachers here but whenever I get the chance I always attend workshops with whoever is visiting or wherever I am. Like you, I am just in love with the relationship between dance and percussion.

If you ever come to Australia, be sure to look me up!

Talk to you soon.

Mike
