Two more interesting finds... This one is made out of the trunk of an Agave cactus:

I don't know anything about the properties of Agave wood but, seeing it's a cactus, I'd expect it to be quite soft.

This one is made out of ceramic:

WOW, these made me crack up so much! I do not have a picture of the one that came my way to be re-headed... the detail was not-so-noticeable; until I looked inside to see why it had such a funny sound: the hair was STILL ON and it had been put on the djembe UPSIDE-DOWN! Mahiri was down for a visit at the time and we rolled with laughter for a good half hour.

Oh my God that is funny. Saves on the shaving time, though, I guess, LOL.

Here's a nice one. I searched 'professional djembe' on ebay and came up with this beauty from Mexico. Check out the sweet combo of key and rope tuning. I feel like I have been missing out, darn it.

Another find. The description says
DJEMBE BONGO AFRICAN DRUM 65CM PROFESSIONAL QUALITY

his drum IS AWESOME . This is the one that the pros use.

At least, at A$ 239.00, it's realistically priced.

Note the way skin is tucked under verticals instead of being trimmed off or pulled over the rings. I haven't seen that before.

Cheers,

Michi.

This one is unusual too. Yes, someone is actually selling this. I can only assume that the shape is considered to be ergonomically advantageous for the seated player...

Carl, this one would look awesome with one of those dyed skins you were talking about. I think purple would make a particularly fine match :)

You guys, wouldn't it be hilarious to actually aquire some of these beauties and set up a museum? They are amazing. I especially love the eagle.

Great idea! We could call it the "Djembe House of Horrors" :)

I'm not sure I'd be prepared to spend thousands of dollars on junk though, no matter how high the amusement value. Besides, the cleaning bill for the venue could be pretty steep too, what with the visitors vomiting all over the place... ;)

Cheers,

Michi.

The eagle is indeed the worst (or best, depending on your pov)... ;) For some reason, it reminds me of a life-size chainsaw-"carved" sculpture I once saw of a standing grizzly bear. (At least, I think it was supposed to be a grizzly...)
