Where doe this Djembe come from?

Postby Mr B » Thu Nov 11, 2010 9:56 am

Hi guys

I'm new to this forum. Been drumming for about 9 years now. Self tought and live in South Africa. I've been lurking for a while, reading posts etc. and I've found the info very useful. Thanks to all of you guys!

I have a question - does anyone know where this drum is from?

There's a guy selling it and I want to know if it is any good but he lives too far away for me to test it.

Thanks
Bryan

That is most likely an Indonesian copy. Highly unlikely to sound good.

Cheers,

Michi.

I don't know where it's from. Not likely from West africa. Maybe Bali
The skin doesn't look too bad. You could knock a sound out of it.

But if you want a real djembe you'll need to look else where.

Here's the cheapest place i know for drums. I never tried one but for a budget drum these look ok. avg 135 euro. Plus postage from france.

I always wonder why don't dudes from S Africa try to venture up to west africa to pick up some drums and get some decent training?

Any ways take it easy

I don't think that south-Africa is much closer to West-Africa than, say, Ireland....

Yea but i've been there 3 times

You can fly for 300 euros, I'd say you can get some cheap flight from S Africa no? Or a car. the first time i went i got down for bout 100 euros. travelled by land. took just 6 days from malaga Spain. I still haven't heard of anybody doin it quicker

Hey guys

Thanks for your advice. @thekid - Even though South Africa is in Africa it is still m i l e s away from West Africa ;) and a non-direct flight (can't get a direct flight) is about 1000 euros from South Africa...

I just don't have the time to drive there although I think that would be a pretty cool experience in iteself...

I would love to go and might just end up doing that some time. :D

Oh and the drum in question is going for 30 euros second hand so it probably isn't any good.

30 quid is a fair price. At least its a real goat skin on there. The wood is prob just ok and the interior will show signs of being worked on a lathe. Basically a mass produced drum. That french site i recommended has african hard wood drums goin for 100 euro. It's not too bad. Still these would only be regarded as average djembes but it's cheap. Good luck with it.
