Where to buy in South Africa?

Postby AndOmaha » Wed May 12, 2010 2:57 am

My girlfriend is going to South Africa next week. I need her to get me a drum while she is there. I have tried to show her the difference between a quality djembe and one thats not.

To maybe make it easier on her, do any of you know of a reputable dealer in South Africa, that sells West African drums?

Blesssings...

I am doubtful that she will find any high quality West African jembes in South Africa.

A "reputable dealer in South Africa, that sells West African drums?"
Please take a moment to reflect upon your question.... It's kind of like asking the Vatican if they know any Catholics that can tell you about Buddhism. If you want a West African drum, the place to get it will be West Africa.

it's a fair question. if you can get good west african drums in usa, europe, australia, japan, etc, then why not south africa? and with the relative proximity to west africa compared to those countries, you'd think you'd get them cheaper. unfortunately, most of the djembes i have seen on the south african websites were poor grade. an image search for djembes in south africa didn't get me any closer. andomaha, i wouldn't like your chances of your girlfriend bringing back anything decent unless she's going to travel to mali, guinea, burkina faso or ivory coast.

I believe the answer to your "why not?" is because the djembe has shown itself to have massive value to djembe enthusiasts in "usa, europe, australia, japan, etc" whereas, in my experience, it is not taken seriously by people from south africa and is merely mass-produced to gain profits from unsuspecting tourists.
