Overseas Connection Djembes?

Postby glorplaxy » Fri Nov 19, 2010 12:37 am

I have been looking at this djembe from a company called Overseas Connection which supposedly is made in Mali and was imported by said company. It's had a 13 inch head...says is it made with "African hardwoods"...it's hand made...has the nice African goat skin, etc...

Does anyone know about this company? Should I avoid it? What really concerns me is that they carry this djembe at Guitar Center, and I have known Guitar Center to carry mainly bad products when it comes to different drums from around the world, like Remo djembes and Meinl darbukas...but the official Overseas Connection website does have some very interesting looking djembes that do not look like something that would typically be on a Guitar Center shelf.

http://www.overseasconnection.com/Merch ... Code=Drums

I know the basics of what to look for in a good djembe so I'm not totally clueless, but I'd like some information from someone who may have had some hands-on experience with this company, if at all possible. I haven't played this djembe...nor have I heard a sample of it.

Thanks

Thanks a lot. Have you tried any products that have been imported by OC?

I'll have to check out some local products. There are a couple of stores that make their business off of importing African goods, so I think I could try them.

also..do you think a djembe like this would produce a decent, more authentic sound? of course that is the most important thing... i really don't want something that sounds like a remo or something

My first djembe was an OC medium-sized shell. I still have it (gave it to my son) and it sounds great. Hare' wood, cracking slaps and super deep bass, I just wish it was a full-sized shell. I think I paid $175 for it at a Guitar Center..

Oc Djembes are actually Kangaba Djembes made in Mali. They are decent quality djembes. I've seen some better than others. Just got to play it and see it in person to make sure its what you want.
