Postby wonderwebb » Thu Dec 03, 2009 10:26 pm

]thinking about buying this djembe . I already have a good sounding lenke djembe from mali.
I saw this drum on ebay for quite a good price and wanted to know if anyone could identify the wood?
1ts head is 14.5 inch just needed some advice on wether you think this will be a sweet sounding instrument or another clanger

Yes. Doesn't look like a particularly good specimen to me either...

Cheers,

I had the feeling that was the case here is the link
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... _500wt_975

I was gonna get it reskinned with a cow skin but was unsure of the shell
Dont think ill bother with it now

Im no expert in djembes but have bought about 3.

My first was what seems to be a indoniesian djembe which i thought was brilliant at first.lol
After realizing that it was not my technique but the drum that was not giving me a good slap or tone and that the drum was holding me back. I Bought two of these for £90

I then purchased a "proffesional" ghana drum which compared to my first drum seemed like a rolls royce
This drum served me well for a short time and still thought it was my technique letting me down i wanted my drum to sound like my teachers. Dont get me wrong the ghana drum was a vast improvement on what i had but still did not have that magic voice of a completely diffrent tone and slap. That drum cost me £110

My last drum that i bought is a drum from mali or so im told no special or fancy carvings but after looking at many of the other drums on the show us your axe thread it seems to be lenke and is considerably heavier than my previous drum. I hit this drum once when i went to buy it and knew after first strike that this was something completley diffrent it worked ! lol paid £250 for this one and been satisfied with this. Been playing for 6 months in total and got to say that my last drum can make the same sounds as my teachers (if he plays it heehee).

Now the reason im looking for a new drum is because i have heard two people playing with cow skin djembes and just loved the tones comming from these drums and think it would compliment my good goat skin djembe. Should i be looking for the same djembe as the one i have with just a cow skin on it. The same guy that sold me my good djembe says he has another one with a split skin on it which he will sell for £60 and a cow skin which he will sell me for £30 this might be the way to go.

On the cow skin do diffrent cow skins have a big variation on sound
I suppose what im asking is if i have a good sounding goat skin djembe and i change the skin to a cow am i going to have an equally good cow skin djembe

all help and advice welcomed
