You guys are great! Thanks for asking and allowing me to share about my djembe!

So, the dilemma was whether to go with my heart or my head. I wavered back and forth. I knew you guys knew what you were talking about and I wanted to follow your advice. But I also knew I wasn't connecting with the drum I had brought home even though it was a really good drum.

One minute I convinced myself that I was going to keep the first one. But as the day got closer to go see the other one, my excitement grew! So, I knew I wanted the one my heart loved and pretty musch decided to get it even with its flaws.

(Is your heart pounding in suspense as to what I did? Maybe I should make you wait awhile to find out! ;) )

Bill was out of town, so I met with his lovely wife. She is a djembe player, too. This time, we stayed inside. That helped. I didn't have the street noise to contend with. She played both drums for me (and two others that I had seen before). The more she played, the better I began to hear the differences in them. Some where higher pitched. The one I had originally fallen for, still had the ringing. In fact, I heard it better this time. She said it was an overtone (I think). It was bad. She said it might be possible to get rid of the ringing, but she had a djembe that had been worked on repeatedly and it could not be fixed. I had actually heard one of the drums on my new Gentle Djembe vid that had a ringing it it wasn't a nice sound. SO ... I decided against that one.

I also decided against the one I had originally bought. Though it had a really balanced sound to her, it was to sterile sounding for me (does that make since)? It was almost too perfect.

So, I bought the drum that I really wanted when I first saw them but had avoided because it had a spot on the skin. I had read not to get one with bites or tears. But upon closer inspection, it was not a bite or tear. She looked at it and held it up to the light and said she saw no weak spots or problems. It was headed by the lady that heads Bill's drums and she's really good.

It has a more mellow and warm sound to me. It suits me very well. AND, to top it all off, it has a beautiful spotted skin! :D

OK, I'm going to try to post pics for you (if you're still awake after all that)! Not the best pics but at least you can see her!

To post pics, you need to upload them using the Attachments tab on the posting screen. President the PostReply button (don't use QuickReply feature). Below the text entry area, press the "Upload attachment" tab and select the files to upload. Then put the cursor where you want an image to appear in the post and place the image inline.

Cheers,

Michi.

OK, I already did that but they are too big even after I resized them and now you have to click on the scroll arrow thingy on the side of the pic to see it all. That's after the second resize.

What now? Leave it as it is?

She's still beautiful!!

EDIT: OK, forget it. I clicked on one of the pics and you can see the whole thing without scrolling. YEA!

Jan, I was glad to read this post because I had a similar experience with my djembe having a ringing sound which drives me crazy sometimes. I have noticed that WHERE I play it affects how much it rings, and I h ave also noticed that WHO plays it also has an affect. When drummers better than me play it I don't hear the ring...and neither do they. So I'm hoping practice will be part of the solution :-)

Hi Gaby,

I think it's a good thing that your djembe doesn't ring when others play it. That sounds like a technique problem, not a drum problem. And I'd think a technique problem would be better to have, because you can improve your technique! A ringing drum might not be salvagable.

The drum I was looking at was ringing no matter who played it - and I had a pro playing it.

Good luck!

I SO got the right drum! I love this thing! I really had no desire to play the other one. I really connect with this one! Before I went to work this morning, I went into the den and just had to bang on it some. It made me so happy! (This is how I felt sitting on the sidewalk when I first played the drums. I didn't feel it when I got home with the other one. I am so glad that feeling is back!)

I can't believe how happy I felt after just a couple of minutes of playing it! I usually grumble on the way to work or feel really tense. Today I was happy going to work because I was thinking about playing my drum and how it made me feel.

Is this normal?! Is this how ya'll feel when you play your drum?

I LOVE my djembe!! :djembe:

Don't worry, irrational bouts of happiness, uncontrolled smiling, and elevated endorphin levels are common side-effects and nothing to be concerned about. Consult a psychiatrist if happiness persists.

Spread the word, people! We can make the whole planet happy! :D
