booked my ticket here are my options all opinions welcomed.

Right after my previous post 'wanting a good drumming holiday' and the responses given here i have booked a ticket to gambia.

This was basically down to a quote from michi saying [quote]Also keep in mind that, if you are still at the early stages of playing, it doesn't matter whether you learn from someone in Ghana or someone in Mali. There is so much to learn, and the subtleties of style will probably elude you until some time later.
/quote]

Then thanks to dleufur i looked at the flights to the gambia from the uk and found some real good deals along with options to drum. So far i have got two options which i am finding it hard to choose between i have the choice of a compound in gambia

This looks good as its 4-5hrs drum tution a day and is 30 mins from airport

The costs work out to £300 per week all included

option 2 is a trip to senegal
[url]http://www.alnaniking.co.uk/senegal/contact/index.htm/url]

When i worked out the costs it works out to

£140 pw accom full board lessons £7per hour

Oh and £120 transfer
this deal looks ok just wonderd if after i did say two hrs lessons a day it would be enough and do you think i would be able to find others to practise with after lessons were over?

Well if anyone has any opinions on these options please let me know or if you have been to any of these places let me know .
Cheers wonderwebb

Hi,

My experience with the Gambia is that there are enough people to play with. Got my first djembé-playing there, with enough guys who were enthousiastic to play with me. Be carefull buying a djembé over there. Mine was out of two parts glued together. But that was my first, now I know what to look for..... When you decide to go to Senegal: I wouldn't pay 120 pounds for a transfer. That is a lot of money. But it depends on how you are prepared to negotiate with taxi-drivers, if it's your first time there you get the feeling you pay too much for everything..... Part of the Africa experience!

Hi Web, I was 3 months in Alla leake kunda with Tomas, who is dead now. The teacher Gibi, is Tomas
son.. Tomas never suffered fools and he devloped his own unique technique training.. Gibi was just about twelve when I was there... He grew up in the drum and im sure he can teach you alot...

The area is touristic enough, so watch out for people filling you with crap... And shop around for a drum,, if its been painted there is something wrong...
