Re: African Rhythm Traders

Hi all,
I realize this thread is really old, and opinions of RT may have mellowed a bit, but I wanted to weigh in with my experience as a neophyte new to percussion and African drumming.

In my case, the grass is definitely not greener. I live in Portland, and am quickly realizing how lucky I am to have several local resources to feed my new addiction for African percussion. Rhythm Traders was the one of the first sources I discovered, and the things they do to promote percussion education, especially African drumming, is fantastic. I find their store staff knowledgeable and helpful. They have a great studio room they make available for group classes for drumming and dancing. Instruction is very accessible--everyone I've interacted with has been helpful and not the least bit condescending. Unfortunately (or fortunately for me) I can't comment on mail order, but I highly recommend the brick-and-mortar experience at RT.

I wanted to buy my drum locally, but in the end found one I liked better and was higher quality elsewhere. I do, however, support them via my CD and DVD habit, the investment in which is quickly surpassing the cost of my drum. :uglynerd:

I guess I'm lucky discovering djembe now instead of 10 years ago.
