growing up in conakry, fatouabou camara began playing the djembe from a young age. he was a member of ballet djoliba, playing alongside mamady keita and eventually taking over his role as 1st soloist. he was also a soloist for percussions de guinee for 7 years, koteba (abidjan) and wofa before starting his own group, fatouabou percussions. he also performed and recorded with the late sax player, singer and arranger, momo wandel soumah. he is one of the specialists of susu rhythms and passes on his knowledge of guinean percussion to the younger generations.

this footage is from a workshop in 2004, care of drlee. in it he teaches two susu rhythms: yoki and mane.

If you haven't seen this documentary (or its predecessor, "Dembefola"), this is compulsory viewing for anyone interested in Mandingue music.

Cheers,

Michi.
