Hint: effective quoting

Postby bubudi » Tue Aug 18, 2009 2:48 am

when replying to a message using the normal reply button, you will notice that underneath the reply box you will have all the previous posts in the thread starting from the most recent. highlight the sentence or paragraph you want to quote, then click on 'quote' which appears on the upper right of that message. easy! that text will be quoted in your message complete with the name of the person you are quoting.

this is preferable to the 'reply with quote' feature which quotes an entire post. if the post you are quoting is more than several lines in length, 'reply with quote' would make your post more difficult and take longer to read. with this new way, you can quote only the bits you really need. oh yea, and the beauty of it is you can use this method to quote from more than one post in the same reply. try it!

here is a step by step guide to how to do multiple quoting without fuss.

1. reply to topic using either of the 'post reply' buttons located on the top and bottom of the topic page.

2. scroll down and find the previous posts, located in their own scroll box. you can scroll down the box of previous posts until you find the post you want to reply to. highlight the text you want to quote and click the 'quote' button located on the top right of the post.

3. this will bring you back to your reply and the text you highlighted is now quoted in your message. you can then reply to the quoted text.

4. now i am going to show you how to reply to somebody else's post within the same topic. repeat step 2 for the next post containing text you want to quote.

5. now both quotes are contained in your reply. continue writing your reply as usual.

add as many quotes as you require. that's it!

Fixing Nested Quotes.

Postby Carl » Tue Aug 18, 2009 1:05 pm

Nice tutorial bubudi.

Just to add something, I've noticed that when you use this method to select "nested" quotes, you lose the nesting!

Ex:
Quote 1.tiff
Quote 1.tiff (97.26 KiB) Viewed 237 times

When quoted looks like this:
Quote 2.tiff
Quote 2.tiff (161.81 KiB) Viewed 237 times

To fix this, replace "Carl Wrote" with
Code: Select all
(yes you need the brackets!)
at the end of the nested quote add
Code: Select all
It looks like this:
Quote 3 copy.tiff
Quote 3 copy.tiff (189.63 KiB) Viewed 241 times

Hope this helps!

i don't see your 2 images, carl. can you please edit your post and reattach the images in jpg format? (png also works in all up-to-date browsers, but tiff is a bit mac specific i think)

i think i might understand the problem though. if you're going to quote a reply which has nested quotes, skip the highlighting part in step 2 and go straight to the 'quote' button that appears on the post you are quoting. then delete any part of the quoted message that you don't need.

[translation: 'nested quotes' means a quote within a quote. in carl's example above, he was quoting 'not me' who was quoting 'someone else'. note that you can not have more than 3 nested quotes in a message. that would be too messy and confusing, anyhow.]
