that's exactly what i was saying. that's the whole thing... otherwise i would be undoing the edits instead of putting a time frame on edits. i hear you on text-based misunderstandings. thanks for clarifying.

as for a one week time frame, i'm concerned that would allow too much leeway for the spammer or troublemaker. i was thinking more 2-3 days. i understand the possible inconvenience, particularly to those who are very fond of editing. it'sa matter of finding the right balance.

james and i didn't get the chance to discuss it last night at sibo's gig. great gig, by the way, with malin sylla on the kora and lead vocals, mory and aicha dancing, bangourake, pape mbaye and family and of course sibo bangoura. sibo payed much respect to boka and requested a minute of silence for him. he also played a short video of boka doing his stuff during the recording of sibo's cd.

...back to topic - i'll be discussing it with james this week and we'll announce the next step. for now the limit is extended to 7 days.

I do appreciate your willingness to discuss this further; also the change to a 7-day limit for now - very much, in fact. so, thanks in advance to both you and James!

Re. spam, I would imagine that the whole idea is to delete spammers' user accounts + any posts that get through, so I'm not quite seeing how limits on post editing would change anything there. (when I did my stint as a board mod, one of my main duties was spam-killing, and i suspect that's true for most who take on that role.)

as far as not being able to restore deleted text, i think - realistically - that there are limits to what can and can't be controlled (as in the rest of life). I've seen the kind of thing you're talking about happen on a few other boards, but really, it's a pretty rare occurrence. And I'm assuming - perhaps incorrectly - that you've got some kind of backups running here?

At any rate, I'm sticking to the alternative ways of dealing with things/case-by-case line that I stated earlier. I doubt you're going to see anyone destroy important posts and sections of the board as an act of revenge or wanton vandalism, really... And if someone *is* thinking about doing that, they likely have fairly advanced hacking skills, so the post edit time limit isn't really going to be an obstacle. (I think, but that's just me.)

This was meant to be an addendum to my last reply, but the board is acting a bit odd, so....

Re. being "fond of editing," guilty as charged, though really, i think for some of us, it's just a natural part of the process of using text to communicate. I usually edit quite a bit before I ever hit "submit," and then find (often) repetitive material, or that i could state something more clearly, or some typos or errors - or even all of the above. So going back in and making some adjustments is just (for me) a normal thing.

I realize that not everyone thinks - and writes - in that way. My guess is that it's akin to the differences in learning "styles" (visual, verbal, auditory, whatever).

And I do think it's worth taking into account, if only because so many different people are using the board. There's bound to be a broad range of approaches.

I really would like to see that time limit changed. I just realized that I have a typo in the pattern I posted in http://www.djembefola.com/board/workshops-lessons/mamady-workshop-san-diego-t1186-30.html#p7615. Now, just over 24 hours later, I find I cannot correct the mistake :(

Cheers,

Michi.
