King's Festival in Cassamance

Postby bubudi » Tue May 11, 2010 9:09 am

good documentary on the djola people and the king's festival, which amazingly survived through some pretty tough times. it was raining that year, but the festival, drumming, etc continued. note the plastic drums around 3:00 in the first clip. who needs remos? the wrestling wound up being mud wrestling. also, one villager speaks english fairly well with an english accent! (4:00) obviously one of the catholic ones. there's an ekonkon dance covered (10:00-12:20).

in part 2 the wrestling is covered in greater detail and some of the harsh realities of everyday life. then the king appears (6:00). the women also participate in wrestling.
