This malian djembe has extremely rich and thick tones, a product of the extremely large sized head and extremely high quality thick wood found in this models. All warm tones, cracking slaps and enough bass to rattle the floors. This drum is made of lengue wood and uses the finest quality rope and skin available.The actual raw wood from these drums comes primarilty from the western region of Mali, not far from the border of Guinea.
The actual drums have been carved in Bamako by Yacoub Kone, well known for his talent and expertise. He is responsible for many Malian drums that make it to the US. This particular djembe is precious. Lighter and more adapted to the cranked high notes, it combines a smaller more lightweight body with a large head. This specific design enables it to produce a more higher frequency tone and slap, while still retaining that fat bass sound. Check out the design carved into the bottom.
I am selling this drum to send the money back to my teacher Matche who lives in Bamako.
