Anyone bought a quality Djembe in uk/europe

Postby IB1Dance » Mon Jun 29, 2009 10:49 am

Hi,

After reading this forum I haven't found mention of any UK/Europe based shops that are trusted for selling quality Djembe .
Anyone bought a Djembe from the UK/Europe recently ?
Obviously I wish not to pay shipping chargers but also be more environmentally friendly than shipping a drum all the way from Africa or the U.S.A etc .

there are some very good drums on that site under 'guinea drums'. the family who run it are very good people.

There are a number of good shops and good private retailers in the Netherlands. If you need addresses, mail me.

At least this site offers pictures of the actual djembe you will be buying, info on the wood, height etc. I personally would go for the Guinee djembe's, 250 - 300 EUR is a good price. I'm not too fond of the light wood and deco of the Ghana djembe's advertised there.

250 - 300 EUR is getting out of my price range. Thanks anyway.

On another note , what are the purpose of the 'side attachments' you see on some Djembe's, including the Djembe pictured on this sites Header?.

Do they amplify the sound?

that drum is too small. go for their 13" model: http://www.djmmusic.com/ItemMatrix.asp? ... =undefined

that will set you back 145 euros. not too bad.

i find it useful to ask how serious you are about djembe. if it's something you have a passion for, save your money and wait till you can afford one of the guinea drums from djembemoves. if it's just going to be a sideline to other percussion or just a bit of fun at a drum circle, go for the ivory coast drum from djmmusic.

a

I'm extremely passionate about Rhythm :dundun: since that is life .Dancing has led me onto wishing to learn to play the Djembe .Much of the 'western' style Dj club music that I Dance too, either has some Authentic native percussion or is heading more towards synthesised Drumming that sounds quite 'Human'.

So for the moment the simply way for me is to listen to percussive music on my headphones whilst playing the Djembe.

I like the Djembe only because of the natural 'sound' it makes. With a decent tonal range.I'm not particularly interested in the African traditions or any other form of belief ,way of life other than:-

Being/feeling the rhythm - Playing a Drum to me is just moving your hands or Body in Rhythm = Dancing

For now I think I will go for the 13" Djembe from http://www.djmmusic.com since they also have the 'waterproof' Djembe bag that I require thus I can get them all posted together.

Thanks for the help Guys !

sounds like a plan. glad to be of help. let us know how it went after your drum arrives and you get a chance to play it in.

drumming and dance are basically an extension of one another. keep exploring! most of us here are passionate about the trad west african rhythms and like learning about the culture and history. not for any religious reasons, tho.

Yes an extension of one another, they are one.

I feel that the African culture of playing music/dancing together are the best social forms of 'bonding' any human community can participate in.

once again thanks again for the input.I'm going to start a new thread in light of what I have found whilst searching for a 'Quality' Djembes.

I've bought a couple of very nice lenke Guinean djembes from Iya Sako, based in Yorkshire UK - he has a website, lovely man, very straight to deal with.

I don't think you'll avoid making an environmental impact by not shipping the drum from Africa since it would have come from Africa originally.
My friend just bought a drum from Baragnouma http://www.baragnouma.com/djembes.php
The quality is incredible! It only cost 200euro including shipping to Ireland. I was over in Burkina myself and searched long and hard and only with great difficulty found anything close to the quality of these beasts.
I thoroughly recommend them!

Ditto on Baragnouma, just bought a noumou djembe from them and it's well nice. Great price, great service and great quality. I was well impressed at how quick it got here as well.
